MDMA was initially discovered by a German pharmaceutical company in 1912 as part of a blood-clotting agent. It was later rediscovered by Alexander Shulgin, a psychedelic chemist, and introduced to the therapeutic community by Leo Zeff, a therapist. Its popularity grew in the UK during the 1980s, leading to the emergence of rave culture.
After MDMA became illegal, there was a wave of research aimed at proving its neurotoxicity and harmful effects. However, many of the studies were flawed and did not account for other substances and variables. The most notorious case was a study in which monkeys were given methamphetamine instead of MDMA. The propaganda and misinformation led to a demonization of the drug, sparking moral panic and misinformation in the media.
Current research suggests that MDMA does deplete serotonin levels and can potentially cause damage to serotonin nerve endings with heavy and frequent use. However, these effects are not as severe as initially claimed, and the brain has the capacity to recover once MDMA use is discontinued. Claims about severe hangovers or prolonged negative effects have not been supported by scientific studies. Research on recreational MDMA users is limited, but future studies may provide more clarity on potential side effects.
Despite its history of demonization, MDMA has shown promising therapeutic potential. MDMA-assisted therapy has been found to be effective in treating conditions such as PTSD, with significant improvements and positive outcomes. Studies have shown that MDMA can facilitate a critical period in the brain, allowing for the rewiring of neural pathways related to trauma. The FDA is currently reviewing the potential approval of MDMA for therapeutic use in treating PTSD.
Rick Doblin played a crucial role in bringing MDMA back to scientific and medical credibility. He founded the nonprofit organization MAPS to sponsor trials and dedicated his life to promoting MDMA-assisted therapy. His efforts have led to a shift from negative drug-war research to positive research at Johns Hopkins.
MDMA-assisted therapy involves multiple sessions with a therapist. The therapy starts with discussions and preparatory sessions before the day of the session. During the session, the patient takes a pill and spends the day with therapists, using eye shades, headphones, and music to go within and tap into their feelings. Individual experiences vary, but the therapy aims to provide new perspectives, reveal insights, and facilitate healing. Integration sessions follow to discuss lessons learned and how to apply them in daily life.
As implausible as it might sound, it's entirely possible that by this time next year, MDMA could be recognized as a medicine eligible for insurance coverage. In a captivating discussion, Adam engages with journalist and author Rachel Nuwer to explore the extraordinary trajectory of MDMA, from its accidental laboratory creation to becoming the quintessential party drug, enduring as the primary target in the War on Drugs, and now potentially heralding a groundbreaking advancement in the field of mental health.
