insights INSIGHT
Interleukin-6 and Cytokine Storm
Interleukin-6, a key inflammatory cytokine, acts as a fire alarm, alerting the body to foreign invaders.
Excessive or prolonged IL-6 levels lead to a cytokine storm, causing autoimmune issues like those seen in COVID-19.

COVID-19 and Hemoglobin
COVID-19 may be a disease of the hemoglobin, where it loses its iron molecule, leading to reduced oxygen binding.
This free iron causes oxidation and tissue damage, potentially triggering a massive cytokine storm.

Stem Cell Therapy's Promise
Stem cell therapy may be the most promising treatment for COVID-19 among currently studied modalities.
It has shown potential in early studies, particularly in severe cases requiring ventilators.

Life at the Extremes of Mental and Physical Ability
Rowan Hooper
In Superhuman, Rowan Hooper delves into the lives of individuals who have achieved extraordinary levels of mental and physical ability. The book is structured into three parts – Thinking, Doing, and Being – and explores various characteristics such as intelligence, memory, language, and endurance. Hooper interviews 'superhumans' like Dean Karnazes, a prolific ultra-marathon runner, and Alexander Arguelles, a polyglot who speaks over fifty languages. He also discusses the latest scientific thinking and genetic studies to understand what enables these individuals to achieve such advanced levels of aptitude. The book challenges common beliefs, such as the 10,000-hour rule, and offers an inspiring and scientifically grounded look at human potential.
In this bonus episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Harry Adelson, N.D., one of the early adopters of using stem cells for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain. I asked him to come in for this special short podcast because I wanted to talk specifically about immune function and stem cells, and get thoughts from one of the leaders in the field on stem cells, and Covid-19, and viruses, and immunity.
DISCLAIMER: Dr. Harry Adelson wishes to be clear that he does not treat COVID-19 under any circumstance, with stem cells or anything else. He leaves that to the infectious disease specialists.
Dr. Adelson founded Docere Clinics, in Park City, Utah, in 2002 where he practiced Regenerative Injection Therapy until 2010. Since then, he's been treating exclusively musculoskeletal pain conditions using stem cells. He has performed over 6,000 stem cell procedures, putting him solidly among the most experienced in the world.
We discuss stem cells and the connections to inflammation from viruses specifically. “Of the modalities that are being studied, stem-cell therapy actually potentially shows the most promise,” Dr. Adelson says. Listen on to learn more about the science behind how stem cells work in the body and their systemic anti-inflammation effect.
