Deep dives
Reframing the Name ADHD
The podcast delves into the negative connotations associated with the name Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It challenges these stigmas by suggesting alternative, more positive descriptors for common ADHD traits. For example, reframing 'hyperactivity' as 'energetic' and 'troublemaker' as 'fun seeker' aims to shift perceptions and promote a more empowering view of individuals with ADHD. By reconsidering these labels, the episode encourages a more inclusive and understanding approach towards neurodiversity.
Adjusting Attitudes towards ADHD
The episode explores how individuals with ADHD can adapt their self-talk and attitude towards their condition. By highlighting the tendency for self-criticism and shame spirals, it encourages reframing negative self-perceptions. Emphasizing self-compassion and utilizing the 'four R's of reframing'—recalibrate, remember, remind, and reward—it aims to foster a more supportive and understanding relationship with oneself in managing ADHD-related challenges.
Educating Others on ADHD Stereotypes
The podcast addresses the importance of dispelling stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding ADHD. By proposing alternative terms for commonly associated traits like risk-taking, impulsiveness, and distractibility—such as 'brave,' 'creative,' and 'curious'—it aims to reshape public perceptions. Educating others on nuanced facets of ADHD traits seeks to encourage empathy, understanding, and destigmatization of neurodiverse behaviors and characteristics.
Redefining ADHD Traits
In the episode, various stereotypical traits linked to ADHD are examined and redefined to promote a positive reinterpretation. By reframing traits like impulsiveness, distractibility, and non-compliance as attributes of creativity, curiosity, and unpredictability, the podcast challenges conventional labels. The process of redefining and encouraging a shift in perspective on ADHD traits contributes to fostering a more accepting and inclusive understanding of neurodiversity.
If you had a button to get rid of your ADHD or someone else’s, would you press it? The perception society has around Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is pretty negative. You would find it hard to believe there are benefits to something that has three unfavorable words as part of its name. I would rename ADHD in a heartbeat if I could. In our book, ADHD Is Awesome, we talk about alternate names we would use or others have come up with. But no matter what we were to rename ADHD, we need to reframe it.
This week we talk about changing the perception of ADHD, including the reframing name, traits associated with it, and even your own thinking about your ADHD. Listen to the show and let us know if you had a button to get rid of your ADHD or someone else’s, would you press it? I know I wouldn’t. I am grateful for my ADHD because my ADHD makes me who I am.
Special Announcement: We are launching a 3-part bonus series All About ADHD starting on April 8th - stay tuned! Also, you can pre-order our new book ADHD Is Awesomenow!
