Deep dives
Experiencing the Diverse World of Beer
Caitlin Mecheline's journey in the brewing industry began during her time working at the Head of Steam in Durham, where she was exposed to a vast array of beer styles. This experience opened her eyes to the complexities of beer beyond her previous knowledge, which had been limited to cheap pints and lagers. An early memorable encounter was with Delirium Nocturnum, a Belgian ale that captivated her with its unique qualities. This initial curiosity drove her to explore various beer options and deeply engage with the beer community, ultimately igniting a passion for brewing that would shape her career.
Navigating a Non-Traditional Path to Brewing
Caitlin's pursuit of a career in brewing was unconventional, having originally studied Chinese studies, which seemed unrelated to the field. After briefly working in a corporate recruitment role, she realized that it was not fulfilling her desire to engage with the beer industry. She made a decisive move back to bar work at Brewhouse and Kitchen, where she discovered a brewing apprenticeship program. This opportunity allowed her to combine her brewing ambitions with hands-on experience, culminating in her becoming the first female brewing apprentice to complete her level four brewer apprenticeship.
Innovating in Alcohol-Free Brewing
At Cloudwater, Caitlin has focused on establishing a growing range of alcohol-free beers, aligning with her personal enthusiasm for low and no alcohol options. This role involves not only recipe development for innovative products like alcohol-free Negroni Sours and Margaritas but also understanding label legislation across various markets. Caitlin finds the exhilarating challenge of crafting unique beverages that cater to diverse consumer preferences particularly rewarding. Her commitment to learning and experimenting in this niche reflects a broader trend in the craft beer industry towards inclusivity and innovative product offerings.
What beers have you enjoyed brewing lately? For today’s guest it would probably be an alcohol-free Negroni sour, or perhaps an alcohol-free Margarita Gose.
Quite the shift from Delirium Nocturnum, the Belgian Strong Dark Ale that helped open her eyes to the wonderful world of beer. But for Caitlín McErlean, part of the team at Manchester-based Cloudwater, her journey in brewing has been anything but conventional.
For Caitlín, a love of languages would lead her to a degree in Chinese Studies. Originally from Milton Keynes, a move to university in Durham would not only broaden her linguistic horizons but also broaden her palate, too.
In this episode, we discuss Caitlín’s early days working at the Head of Steam in Durham and how that helped introduce her to the myriad of beer styles that exist across the globe. We discuss how becoming a brewing apprentice would help her secure a dream job in her dream city and also how, at Cloudwater, she has been able to further pursue her love of creating no- and low-alcohol beers.
