Understanding Self-Worth and Its Misconceptions
Self-worth is the internal sense of being good enough and worthy of love and belonging. It is not something that needs to be earned or achieved. Many of us feel unworthy due to experiences in our upbringing, such as inconsistent or critical parental figures. However, it is important to recognize that these limitations do not make us unlovable or unworthy. As adults, it becomes our responsibility to build our self-worth regardless of past experiences. This often involves challenging misconceptions and negative self-talk, and seeking support from others who can reflect our worth back to us.
Indicators of Low Self-Worth
Low self-worth can manifest in various ways, including difficulty taking risks and being brave. When we lack self-worth, we often tie our sense of worthiness to external events or accomplishments. This can lead to perpetual fear of failure and codependency on others for validation. Poor boundaries and self-abandonment are also common signs of low self-worth. It is crucial to examine how we talk to ourselves and challenge negative self-talk. Building self-worth involves accepting ourselves with all our perceived flaws and seeking support from like-minded individuals who can provide a safe and nurturing space.
Steps to Uplevel Self-Worth
Taking steps to increase self-worth involves monitoring and replacing negative self-talk. Writing down negative thoughts and using a rubber band trick can help interrupt and reframe these thoughts with positive affirmations. Additionally, approaching self-worth as a form of re-parenting ourselves can be powerful. This includes treating ourselves with love and attention and using exercises like the baby photo exercise to connect with our inherent worthiness as we would with a beloved child. Ultimately, changing our self-worth is an inside job that requires self-awareness, self-compassion, and a commitment to personal growth.
