Mixed age group play offers numerous benefits for children, allowing older kids to learn how to teach while inspiring younger kids to aspire to higher levels of achievement. This approach enables children to break away from the constraints of learning based solely on age and provides opportunities for cross-generational learning. Rather than feeling limited by age-based expectations, children can progress at their own pace and explore subjects when they are developmentally ready. While some subjects may require minimum age limits for safety reasons, a mixed age or grade schooling environment can facilitate a more dynamic and flexible approach to learning.
The current system of age-segregated classrooms is a modern phenomenon that does not align with how humans naturally learn. Schooling as we know it is a recent development, and most learning occurs outside of the classroom. In mixed age classrooms, children can benefit from exposure to peers of different ages, observing and learning from older students who have mastered certain subjects. This approach challenges the traditional linear model of education and encourages a more individualized and flexible learning experience. While there may be some subjects that require a foundation of basic knowledge, many disciplines can be effectively learned in a mixed age setting, empowering children to progress at their own pace and foster cross-generational learning experiences.
In this 140th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
