What is Bushido?

--> Japanese word that literally means "warrior way".

Bushi: "warrior" = literally 'military + man'.
Do: road, or way

• Bushido is also used as an overarching term for all the codes, practices, philosophies and principles of samurai culture.
• Bushido formalized earlier samurai moral values and ethical code, most commonly stressing a combination of sincerity, frugality, loyalty, martial arts mastery and honour until death
• It allowed the violent existence of the samurai to be tempered by wisdom, patience and serenity
• A code often unuttered to unwritten.
• Requires a rite of passage, and in order to become a Samurai, one must master this code.
• Variations by clan, by tribe and by territory.

Eight virtues of Bushidō (as defined by Nitobe Inazō):

1. Righteousness (義, gi)
2. Heroic Courage (勇, yū)
3. Benevolence, Compassion (仁, jin)

5. Honesty (誠, makoto)
6. Honour (名誉, meiyo)
7. Duty and Loyalty (忠義, chūgi)
8. Self-Control (自制, jisei)
