Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is characterized by muscular damage, which triggers an immune response. The inflammation that occurs during DOMS peaks around 36 hours after exercise, leading to soreness. The reason why the second day tends to be more painful is that the immune response lasts longer than 48 hours. However, DOMS is not inherently a bad sign, especially if the goal is to get stronger at heavy singles. It is a natural part of the muscle repair and regeneration process. While DOMS can be uncomfortable, it does not necessarily impede strength gains. It is important to differentiate between acute inflammation, which is a normal response to exercise, and chronic dysregulated inflammation, which can be problematic and associated with certain diseases.
