The importance of thorough preparation for speeches and keynote presentations is highlighted, emphasizing the need for intense rehearsals and customization to suit different audience sizes and types. The discussion advocates for building modular speeches that are flexible for adaptation while focusing on delivering transformative ideas that deeply resonate with audiences.
Public speakers are encouraged to have a continuous process of investigation rather than simplistic exploration, aiming to refine ideas through constant learning and integration from diverse sources. By developing a blend of personal stories and insights, speakers can construct compelling talks that challenge conventional thinking and ready themselves to engage audiences effectively.
Effectively communicating and following up with event organizers is crucial in the speaking business. By being attentive to event planners' needs and ensuring a seamless experience, speakers can enhance their reputation and secure future speaking engagements. Providing testimonials and sharing positive feedback from attendees can also help event organizers recognize the value of the speaker's contribution. Additionally, maintaining open lines of communication before, during, and after the event demonstrates professionalism and can lead to long-term partnerships.
Developing a compelling speaking career involves strategic planning and performance skills. Speakers should focus on creating engaging content that resonates with diverse audiences and conveys impactful messages. Incorporating movement on stage strategically, such as using blocking techniques to enhance storytelling, can captivate audiences and reinforce key ideas. Moreover, speakers can leverage books as a valuable asset to generate speaking opportunities and establish credibility within their industry. By honing their performance skills and delivering memorable presentations, speakers can stand out and attract diverse speaking opportunities.
Jay Acunzo is an author, a speaker, and a showrunner. He started his career in marketing working with ESPN, Google and HubSpot. He currently hosts two podcasts. One is called 3 Clips, which was recently acquired by a podcasting platform called Castos, and the other is called Unthinkable, a storytelling podcast about creative people who break from conventional thinking to make what matters most.
I recently reached out to Jay to ask him questions about speaking, and we decided to turn that conversation into a podcast episode to help others too.
I’m calling this “Jay Talking,” a series of conversations with my friend Jay Acunzo that are less so an interview, and more so a conversation between two creators in the trenches of building their businesses.
In this episode of Jay Talking, we talk about speaking, the differences between a keynote and a breakout, how to land gigs, how to prepare for gigs, and some actual next steps I could take if I wanted to become a keynote like my friend Jay.
