Deep dives
Factors contributing to burnout: executive functioning challenges
One of the main factors contributing to burnout among individuals with ADHD is the difficulty in executive functioning. This includes challenges in organizing, prioritizing, managing tasks and deadlines, as well as working memory. These challenges can lead to increased risks and overwhelm, ultimately contributing to feelings of burnout.
Factors contributing to burnout: hyper focus and impulsivity
Hyper focus, a state of intense concentration on a single task, is another factor that can contribute to burnout in individuals with ADHD. While it can sometimes be productive, hyper focus often leads to neglecting other important tasks. Additionally, impulsivity and poor decision making, common in ADHD, can overwhelm individuals and add to the feelings of burnout.
Factors contributing to burnout: chronic stress, perfectionism, and difficulty balancing responsibilities
Chronic stress and anxiety resulting from managing ADHD symptoms can increase the likelihood of burnout. Perfectionism, often developed as a coping mechanism for ADHD, can also add to burnout as individuals strive for unrealistic standards. Difficulty in balancing responsibilities, such as work, relationships, and personal life, can further contribute to feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion.
