The new creation will bring true joy without sorrow or negativity, enabled by God's life-giving spirit.
Deep dives
Pessimism and Christianity
Pessimism and cynicism are considered acceptable within Christianity. While the Bible speaks of joy, it is not synonymous with superficial happiness. Christians can be pessimistic about the world and still experience the joy that comes from knowing they are loved by God.
The Afterlife and the New Creation
In the afterlife and the new creation, there will be no sorrow or negativity. Some wonder if a sin-free life can be fulfilling without troubles and hard times. The answer lies in the full outpouring of God's life-giving spirit, which will make sinlessness and true joy possible.
God's Gender and Motherly Aspects
While God does not have a specific gender, various passages in the Bible allow for the understanding that God can be described in motherly terms. The role of God as a mother is not as prominent as that of a father, but these references offer a different perspective on God's character.
Miracles and the Kingdom of God
Miracles were prominent during Jesus' life and the apostolic period as signs pointing to the coming kingdom of God. However, the expectation for ongoing miracles in the same magnitude as during that time is not emphasized in the New Testament letters or subsequent Christian history.
Is there a place for pessimism in the Christian life? Is Halloween evil? Does God have 'mothering' characteristics, too? Why won't there be marriage in heaven? Yes, it's this season's Q&A episode, and John is having a crack at a heap of listener questions.
