Deep dives
Exploring the Purpose of Movement Practice for Self-Cultivation
The podcast episode delves into the idea that movement practice serves as a tool for self-cultivation, emphasizing the importance of developing character and engaging in self-transcendent practices. It touches upon the concept of the heroic quest where individuals confront challenges akin to facing a dragon to extract personal growth. The conversation delves into the importance of embodying and becoming through movement practice, highlighting the need to balance internal growth with external impact.
Incorporating Various Practices into Evolve Move Play's Approach
The podcast episode discusses the diverse range of practices incorporated into Evolve Move Play's methodology, including mindfulness practices, body-to-body interactions like martial arts, and crafting skills. It emphasizes the value of creating an ecology of practices that steer clear of inherent pitfalls like internal recursion or solely focusing on external achievements. The approach aims to balance internal and external focus for overall well-being and development.
Enhancing Elastic Strength and Movement Diversity
The podcast highlights the upcoming focus on developing elastic strength within Evolve Move Play's methodology to enhance movement capabilities. Rather than solely focusing on conventional strength training, the aim is to incorporate elasticity training to foster springiness and balanced strength profiles. Additionally, the episode touches on diversifying movement practices to include natural parkour, gymnastics, Capoeira, and other disciplines beyond standard flat ground movements.
Complexity and uncertainty in problem-solving
The podcast discusses the challenges of navigating complexity and uncertainty in problem-solving. It explores concepts like Gödel's incompleteness theorem, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and the second law of thermodynamics to highlight the inherent limitations in knowledge and prediction. It emphasizes the need to balance algorithmic thinking with heuristics, especially in movement practices that involve ill-defined problems like chess or parkour.
Reenchanting the world through movement and self-transcendence
The episode delves into the significance of movement practices in reenchanting the world and cultivating wisdom. It emphasizes the role of embodied experiences in understanding and self-transcendence, contrasting Cartesian dualism with the interconnectedness of mind and body. The conversation touches on the pursuit of meaning, self-cultivation, and the integration of practices like communitas and ecstasis to foster personal growth and community bonds.
We recently held our 2019 Return to the Source seminar and by all accounts it was the best event we’ve put on to date. What started years ago as a three day parkour seminar in nature has blossomed and evolved into an event that time and time again brings people together and reconnects them to core components that make life feel more meaningful.
This year we were joined by Aaron Cantor, an incredible coach and friend who’s been on the podcast before. He was both a participant and a facilitator at Return to the Source, and it was an absolute joy to have him present to share his stories, movement, humor and support. Not to mention also leading the group in a wonderful dance party on the final night.
After the event we sat down to film an interview for the podcast, but decided to make this one a little special and let Aaron ask all the questions.
Where did Evolve Move Play start, how did it get to where it is now, and where do we intend to go? What’s the aim of EMP and how do we go about achieving it? How do we determine what’s valuable and who do we look to for inspiration in this vast and chaotic world of beliefs, dogma, misinformation, and mystery? Aaron does a great job as guest interviewer; we share some laughs along the way and it was a valuable means of processing and articulating the deeper insights from the event.
