Deep dives
Exercise as the Key Component for Treating Patellofemoral Pain
Exercise is highlighted as the most crucial component in addressing patellofemoral pain. However, the understanding of exercise's effectiveness has evolved beyond solely biomechanical reasons. While various factors were previously believed to cause the pain, exercise is now recognized as an effective solution for overall function improvement. The mystery of why exercise works remains, but it provides a multitude of options for tailored exercises based on individual preferences and needs.
Pain versus Weakness in Patellofemoral Pain
The cause of patellofemoral pain is still debated between pain itself and weakness. It is uncertain whether excessive activity leads to pain or if pre-existing weakness contributes to the pain. From a practical perspective, the cause may not matter as exercise is the primary tool for managing the condition. Combining different exercise approaches, ranging from specific exercises to more general movements, enables customization according to the individual's capabilities and preferences.
The VMO's Role in Patellofemoral Pain
The VMO (vastus medialis obliquus) has historically been targeted as a potential source of patellofemoral pain. However, recent evidence challenges the significant role of VMO activation in pain improvement. Different exercises can activate VMO to a greater extent but may not necessarily translate to pain reduction. The broader focus on general exercise rather than specific VMO strengthening exercises provides more flexibility in exercise selection to alleviate patellofemoral pain.
