A key aspect of gut health is a diverse microbiome, which can be disrupted by factors like a non-diverse diet, antibiotics, and exposure to glyphosate. The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in overall health and is responsible for producing postbiotics, such as short-chain fatty acids and gases like hydrogen sulfide or nitric oxide. These postbiotics have a direct impact on the health of the gut wall, brain cells, and even communicate with mitochondria. For optimal gut health, it is important to nourish the microbiome with prebiotic fibers and prioritize a diverse dietary profile.
Lectins, plant proteins that protect plants from being eaten, can cause disruption in the gut, leading to a leaky gut and inflammation. When dysbiosis occurs, with an overgrowth of certain bacteria fueled by a high-sugar and high-fat diet, the bacteria produce lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which trigger immune system responses. These LPS particles can cross the gut barrier and cause inflammation in different parts of the body. Avoiding lectins, reducing sugar intake, and promoting a healthy microbiome can help maintain gut integrity and prevent inflammation.
Not all fats are inherently bad for gut health. Certain saturated fats, especially those derived from animal sources, can negatively impact the gut microbiome when consumed in excess. However, medium-chain triglycerides (MCT oil), a type of saturated fat, have unique properties that can support gut health. MCTs are water-soluble and bypass the chylomicron system, allowing them to be metabolized in the liver and stimulate ketone production. The combination of a well-balanced microbiome and mindful fat consumption can contribute to a healthy gut environment.
The health of the gut has wide-ranging effects on aging and chronic diseases. A leaky gut, caused by factors like lectins and dysbiosis, can lead to inflammation that affects various parts of the body, including the brain. Neuroinflammation has been linked to conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Additionally, the gut plays a crucial role in nutrient absorption and the production of important molecules like postbiotics. Nurturing a diverse microbiome and supporting gut integrity can contribute to healthy aging and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Ketones are not just a super fuel, but also act as signaling molecules that instruct mitochondria to protect themselves from damage and save energy during times of starvation.
Mitochondria have emergency exits called uncoupling proteins in the electron transport chain, where excess energy can be wasted as heat to protect the mitochondria from damage.
Maintaining metabolic flexibility is crucial, as it allows our bodies to efficiently switch between different fuel sources, such as glucose and fat, to meet energy demands.
Leaky gut, which involves increased permeability of the intestinal lining, can lead to leaky brain, where foreign substances can enter the brain, causing inflammation and cognitive issues.
Mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles in our bodies, have emergency exits that allow 30% of calories to bypass energy production and generate heat instead. This process, known as uncoupling, is important for maintaining body temperature and is facilitated by brown fat, which contains numerous mitochondria. Brown fat was previously thought to only exist in babies, but it has been found in adults as well. Brand's research shows that super old individuals with uncoupled mitochondria have better health outcomes, suggesting that this process has significant benefits.
During periods of ketosis or low carbohydrate intake, ketones signal mitochondria to protect themselves by reducing energy production and avoiding damage. Simultaneously, mitochondria are stimulated to create more mitochondria to share the workload and work more efficiently. This process resembles a team of dogs pulling a sled, where more dogs allow for greater efficiency and endurance. The waste of fuel in a ketogenic diet is offset by increased calorie consumption, leading to weight loss. This protective mechanism in ketosis is evolutionarily designed to conserve mitochondria and ensure survival.
In this series of conversations, Dr Gundry gives us the simplest break down of what foods are destroying your gut health, the best way to “diet”, why you’re struggling with such low energy levels, and what the real benefits are of a low-carb and ketogenic diet is and what it means for you.
The key takeaway to remember is that energy starts in the gut and being metabolically flexible, being able to switch between different energy sources in your body, is going to be key to finally achieving your best health ever.
