Deep dives
Trevel's Decision to Turn Himself In
After years of hiding his involvement in a shooting, Trevel Coleman turned himself in when he couldn't shake the guilt of what he had done. Despite not being a suspect, he confessed to the crime 17 years later, leading to a 15-years-to-life prison sentence. Trevel's lawyer noted the rarity of someone coming forward so long after the incident, making Trevel's case extraordinary.
Trevel's Path to Clemency
Upon submitting a clemency application, Trevel awaited a response from the governor's office. After receiving the long-awaited call granting him clemency, Trevel faced the Parole Board for a chance at release. Even with clemency granted, the Parole Board interview was crucial, determining his immediate eligibility for parole or a later chance to see the board.
The Parole Board Experience
During the nerve-wracking Parole Board hearing, Trevel faced tough questions about his transformation and future plans. The uncertain aftermath of the interview left him anxious yet hopeful, awaiting a decision that could significantly impact his future. The weight of his potential release lingered until the final decision was made.
The Release and Adjustment to Freedom
Following a mix-up with his release date, Trevel unexpectedly left prison two days earlier than anticipated. The emotional drive to freedom and reunion with loved ones marked a surreal moment after years of incarceration. Despite adjusting to newfound liberties and curfews, Trevel cherished the simple joys of being reunited with family, eagerly planning future adventures with his children.
When we last spoke with Trevell Coleman, he was waiting to hear back about his clemency application. And then, in December of last year, his lawyer got a phone call.
We shared Trevell’s story in two episodes we released last fall. They’re called The Confession Part 1 and 2.
