Addiction can take various forms such as substance abuse, social media addiction, or pornography addiction. These forms of addiction are characterized by the continued compulsive use of a substance or behavior despite harm to oneself or others. Addiction can also be seen as the things we do that we lie about, creating a double life where certain behaviors are hidden and denied. The modern world with its overwhelming abundance of addictive stimuli makes individuals vulnerable to addiction, as their brains have evolved to seek pleasurable stimuli and avoid painful ones.
Pleasure and pain are co-located in the brain, processed in the same regions and acting as opposite sides of a balance. Engaging in pleasurable activities releases dopamine, the brain's reward neurotransmitter, resulting in a pleasurable feeling. However, the brain seeks to maintain balance and will down-regulate dopamine production to restore homeostasis. This leads to a dopamine deficit state, where individuals experience cravings and compulsive urges to repeat the addictive behavior just to feel normal. Withdrawal from addiction involves a protracted period of low dopamine levels, causing cravings, irritability, and withdrawal symptoms.
Throughout history, societies have responded to addiction in various ways. Early Protestants viewed addiction as an action where individuals addict themselves to behaviors, either positive or negative. Different cultures and historical periods had their own ways of understanding and addressing addiction. Approaches ranged from prohibitionist crackdowns to mutual help, but it is important to find a middle ground that combines discipline, compassion, medical treatment, and community support. Recognizing that addiction exists beyond substances and encompasses various aspects of human behavior allows for a broader perspective and more effective approaches to addiction.
The podcast explores the concept of 'anslation' or knowingly engaging in harmful behavior despite being aware of its negative consequences. It highlights that addiction is not simply a matter of regrettable choices, but rather a complex interplay between self-control, societal expectations, and emotional factors. The speaker shares a personal example of repeatedly succumbing to the allure of drinking alcohol despite intending to stop. This highlights that addiction involves a disordered form of choice and is not a binary issue. The discussion also delves into the historical and cultural context of addiction, emphasizing the influence of individualism and self-reliance in the American narrative. This societal focus on self-control and discipline can lead individuals to seek release and connection through addictive behaviors.
The podcast episode challenges the conventional understanding of addiction and drug policies by questioning the division between 'good drugs' and 'bad drugs'. It highlights that drug use is not inherently problematic for everyone and that stigmatizing certain drugs can lead to harmful consequences and societal divisions. The speaker explores the historical roots of drug panics and how they have shaped the perception of addiction, such as the scare around opium and Chinese immigrants, or the association of cocaine with black people in the post-Civil War era. By challenging the dichotomy between 'good' and 'bad' drugs, the episode raises awareness of the societal harm caused by this narrative and the need for a more nuanced approach to drug policies. It also suggests that the recognition of our shared being and interconnectedness can guide us towards a more compassionate and inclusive understanding of addiction.
Talking points: addiction, culture, history, enlightenment, Zen, purpose, non-duality
The ManTalks Podcast has grown exponentially over the last couple years, so for all you newcomers, I like to release a sort of cross-section or "best of" episode to showcase what the podcast is all about—after all, I have talked to some brilliant and varied experts over the years!
This time, the themes are the widest ever: addiction and enlightenment. I chose this to demonstrate my love of the scientific and the spiritual—and my constant goal to balance the two. As Albert Einstein said, science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. I hope you enjoy.
