Deep dives
The Flex Index: A Global Repository of Company Office Requirements
The Flex Index is a data set and product created by Scoop, a software company for hybrid teams. It was developed to address the problem of identifying which companies are hybrid and in what capacity. The Flex Index tracks company office requirements for over 6,500 companies across 30,000+ offices, employing more than 100 million people globally. It provides important insights for job seekers, companies looking to benchmark, and the media to understand the future of work trends.
Collecting Data for the Flex Index
Scoop collects data for the Flex Index in multiple ways. Employees can add their company to the index, providing information on their flexibility requirements. The data is supplemented through public sources like news articles and job descriptions. Additionally, Scoop reaches out to companies to offer them the opportunity to update and customize their listing. These methods have helped create a large and accurate data set over time.
Structured Hybrid Models and Variations Within Teams
The trend towards structured hybrid models, where companies set specific expectations on office attendance, has been rapidly growing. However, variations can exist within teams, as different workflows and team needs may influence which days team members choose to be in the office. Tracking these variations at the team level is challenging due to potential changes in team composition, but focusing on company policies provides a more stable understanding of remote and hybrid work patterns.
The Relationship Between Flexibility and Company Growth
The Flex Index data revealed that companies offering flexibility outperformed fully in-office companies in terms of growth. Across different company sizes and industries, the growth rate of flexible companies was often 2x or 3x higher. This data quantitatively demonstrates the positive impact of flexibility on attracting and retaining talent, suggesting that companies with more flexible policies are better positioned to succeed.
Often referenced Future Forum Research found that flexibility ranked second only to compensation in determining job satisfaction Rob Sadow, Co-Founder and CEO of Scoop was curious to explore how self-reported importance translated to feet on the street, as measured by headcount growth in companies, by Flexible/Hybrid work policy. Rob & team combined the Flex Index, a database representing 6,500 companies’ flexible/hybrid work policies, with partner People Data Labs Labs data on headcount growth by company to find out.
