Deep dives
Warning about False Prophets
Jesus warns about false prophets who claim to speak for God but are actually deceitful. These false prophets can deceive people by appearing righteous and using Christian language, but their true character is revealed by their actions and the fruit they bear in their lives. Jesus emphasizes the importance of discerning the true teachings of God by examining the character, teaching, and relationship with Jesus of these prophets. He warns that even those who prophesy, perform miracles, or cast out demons in His name may be false prophets if they do not have a genuine relationship with Him. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to be watchful and discerning in identifying false prophets and remaining rooted in the teachings of Jesus to avoid being led astray.
Three Tests to Identify False Prophets
Jesus provides three tests to help identify false prophets. The first test is the 'life test,' where individuals are encouraged to assess the character and actions of the prophets. A genuine prophet will display good fruit in their lives, exhibiting integrity, humility, and obedience to God's will. The second test is the 'teaching test,' where individuals are urged to examine the content of the prophet's teachings. True prophets will align their teachings with the teachings of Jesus found in the New Testament and will lead others to follow the will of the Father. The third test is the 'relationship test,' which focuses on whether the prophet truly knows Jesus. It is not enough for a prophet to use Christian language or perform miracles; they must have a deep, intimate relationship with Jesus. These tests serve as guidelines for individuals to discern between true and false prophets.
The Danger of False Prophets
Jesus warns against the danger of false prophets and the potential harm they can cause in leading people astray. False prophets often appear as sheep in sheep's clothing, concealing their true nature as fierce wolves. Jesus cautions that false prophets can mislead, deceive, and exploit others. They may use Christian language, perform miracles, and claim to prophesy in Jesus' name, but if they do not have a genuine relationship with Him, Jesus will reject them on the day of judgment. Thus, it is vital for individuals to be aware of false prophets and their tactics to avoid being deceived.
Becoming True Prophets
In addition to warning against false prophets, Jesus calls His followers to become true prophets themselves. He encourages them to be truth tellers and luminaries in a confused and complex world. By cultivating a deep relationship with Jesus, obeying His teachings, and bearing good fruit in their lives, individuals can become prophetic voices of truth, pointing others towards God's kingdom and the good life. This involves living out the teachings of Jesus, practicing the presence of God, and being grounded in scripture. By embodying the way of Jesus, individuals can counter the influence of false prophets and bring the light of truth and authenticity to their communities.
With so many voices claiming to be the truth, how do we discern what is from God and what isn't? John Mark examine's Jesus's warning to beware false prophets in the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus's three "tests" for who to believe.
