Deep dives
Mindset and Motivation in HiRocks
The importance of mindset and motivation in competing in HiRocks is heavily emphasized. Lucas Storath explains that performance in this sport requires a commitment to giving one's best effort from the very start of a race, as there is no room for a slow strategy at the elite level; those who aim to go slow typically do not end up on the podium. He believes that having a strong mental focus not only influences race outcomes but serves as a valuable life lesson. According to Storath, achieving high results requires a combination of intense effort and a belief that whatever happens is ultimately in the hands of a higher power.
Training Approach and Injury Management
Lucas discusses his training approach, highlighting his extensive background in various sports that laid the foundation for his HiRocks performance. He balances strength training with endurance work, stating that combining these elements, particularly focusing on high-intensity sessions, is crucial for success. He addresses injury management by sharing his experience with race preparation while nursing injuries, noting that alternative training methods like cycling and rowing can help maintain fitness levels. However, he cautions that prolonged periods without running can significantly hinder performance in elite competitions.
The Evolution of Competition Standards
The standards for competition in HiRocks have evolved dramatically since its early days, becoming increasingly challenging. Lucas recounts his initial attempts to break into the elite rankings and how the sport has seen tremendous growth in participation and competitiveness. He notes that what began as a smaller event has transformed into a high-stakes arena where the competition demands not just physical capability but also strategic racing decisions. Lucas reflects on his journey and the significant shifts within the sport, asserting the necessity for athletes to adapt their race strategies as the elite pack becomes faster.
Community and Support in Sports
Lucas highlights the importance of community support within the athletic world, arguing that sports can act as a significant connector between individuals. He insists that fostering relationships and helping one another are vital aspects of being an athlete, urging participants to look out for each other. This camaraderie extends beyond competition, as Lucas mentions the strong bonds formed through his athletic camps, which encourage teamwork and collective growth. He advocates for a positive environment where support and kindness are paramount, reinforcing that the essence of sports transcends mere competition.
In this week’s episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast I get to speak with Lukas Storath (@lukefithyrox). Lukas is a bit of a HYROX legend. He was the first man to break 60mins in the Pro division, and was the winner of the first ever HYROX World Championship (in Oberhausen). But at the age of 44 he continues to perform at the highest level in the sport. He was the winner of last season’s Last Chance Qualifier in Anaheim, he is the 40-44 age group Pro world record holder and is part of the mixed relay world record holding team. In this chat we talk about his training, the changes he’s made to his training over his time in the sport, how he still manages to compete at the highest level despite a busy job and being a dad, his mindset, and much more. It was great to be able to chat with him and I think there’s loads you can take away from it.
