NOTE

The Importance of Early Days: Researching Copy and Tracking Progress

To research how a company does copy, don't look at what they're doing now, but go to the Web Archive and see what they did in the early days. Comparing yourself to the final version is not fair. Look at what they did when they were starting out. Web Archive is a great resource. It helps you track the company's progress and get ideas for phrasing and positioning. You can also learn about the company's culture and how they stood out. Morning Brew is an example. They had a simple homepage that worked well, but now it's more complex due to committee decisions. When starting a media company, counter position against existing ones to reach a wider audience. Barstool Sports and ESPN are examples of successful counter positioning. Look at what's working and go the opposite way.
