Tendons are unique tissues that attach stretchy muscles to stiff bones. This engineering challenge requires a variable mechanical tissue that is both compliant and stiff. Unlike ligaments, which are always better when stiffer, tendons need to be flexible enough to connect to muscles. If tendons are too stiff compared to the strength of the muscle, non-contact muscle pulls can occur.
