How to Get Motivated Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

NOTE

Focusing on the Present: Overcoming the Pitfalls of Binary Thinking in Motivation

Abandon the notion of daily commitments and concentrate on today's actions instead. This shift helps avoid the pitfalls of binary thinking, which often leads to self-demotivation when a slight deviation from a goal is perceived as failure. For instance, if one meditates for 39 days but skips the 40th, they may focus solely on that lapse, disregarding previous successes. Such binary thinking can also impair those recovering from substance addiction, who may view a relapse as negating all prior sobriety efforts. To combat this, anticipate and accept the negative aspects of tasks, adjusting your expectations accordingly. By preparing for challenges, such as resistance to working out or making healthier meals, one can mitigate feelings of being caught off guard. Mentally acknowledging the difficulty and committing to follow through diminishes internal resistance, allowing one to act independently of the desire for immediate gratification. It promotes a focus on actions rather than outcomes, fostering a healthier mindset that allows for persistence despite challenges.
