In order to break down branch chain amino acids, they can either be turned into alanine or alactate. The mitochondria is the compartment responsible for converting acetole coa into energy. Energy can also be produced outside of the mitochondria resulting in the production of lactate. Alternatively, alanine can be produced instead of lactate. Both lactate and alanine can be produced.
