Heritability and Environmental Factors in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases have a low heritability, with the environment playing a significant role. Genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's are not deterministic, and only a small percentage of cases are hereditary. Parkinson's is also suggested to be primarily environmentally mediated. The Lancet Commission on Dementia in 2020 highlighted 12 modifiable and three non-modifiable risk factors for these conditions.
