NOTE

The Dynamics of Licensed IP in the Gaming Industry

Licensed intellectual property in the gaming industry has both advantages and drawbacks. It offers benefits like brand recognition and access to pre-existing audiences, but there is a common prejudice that it leads to bad game design such as slapping familiar IPs on unrelated games. The upfront cost for IP access can discourage developers from taking design risks, leading to a lack of innovation. Owners of the IP often restrict innovative use, prioritizing revenue maximization. Despite these challenges, there is a renaissance in using licensed IP in games as seen with the success of games like Baldur's Gate 3 based on Dungeons & Dragons.
