Muscle Growth: Hypertrophy vs Hyperplasia

Muscle growth can occur through hypertrophy, where individual muscle cells increase in size, or through hyperplasia, which is an increase in the number of cells. In adults, hypertrophy is the main mechanism of muscle growth, as hyperplasia is not significantly supported by evidence. Therefore, when muscles grow following exercise, it is typically due to an increase in the size of individual muscle cells, supported by overall protein synthesis and cell components.
