Malaria History in the Americas

The earliest evidence of malaria in the Americas was found in Peru, characterized by the vivax parasite that survives winters by hibernating in the liver. Vivax is known to recur often and was widespread in Europe and the Americas by the early 20th century. The falciparum parasite, known to be the 'hot' form of malaria, arrived shortly after vivax in the Americas.
