Many nonferrous metals, including zinc, lead, and copper, naturally contain sulfur. While copper has historically been known to cause acid rain, the US farmland soil is now sulfur deficient due to the absence of acid rain. As a result, fertilizer companies are adding sulfur to the fertilizer to improve crop growth. This process also allows for the extraction of extra value from the same concentrate used to produce metal.
