The Importance of Capacity Building: Preparing Farmers for a Cage to Cage-Free Transition
Transitioning from traditional cage systems to cage-free farming requires proper capacity building and understanding of intricate details. It's not simply about moving birds from one place to another. Birds need to be familiarized with the laying facility, as sudden changes can lead to confusion and behavioral issues. Issues like improper nest box usage, feather pecking, and cannibalism can arise if the transition is not done correctly. Farmers must ensure adequate nutrition, enrichment, and infrastructure to maintain a healthy flock. Failing in a cage-free setup may reinforce beliefs in traditional cages, while failures in cage farms are seen as personal errors. Therefore, it's essential to provide farmers with thorough knowledge and support to successfully convert to cage-free systems.
