The prevalent sadness has also resulted in increased meanness, evidenced by rising incidents of abusive behavior in public places and a decline in charitable giving. Nurses in hospitals are facing abuse from patients, leading to a shortage in the profession, while restaurant owners are having to eject customers for their abusive conduct, a phenomenon that was not as common before.
