The 90-Minute Sleep Cycle and Changes in Non-REM to REM Sleep Ratio

Sleep cycles typically last 90 minutes, consisting of alternating stages of non-REM and REM sleep. In the first half of the night, there is more deep non-REM sleep and less REM sleep. However, in the second half, the balance shifts to more REM sleep and less deep sleep. People who try to survive on less sleep are actually missing out on important stages of sleep.
