Utilitarianism, or the pursuit of happiness, can be helpful in the conversation about animals, but it should also focus on the pain and pleasure of the individual creatures, not just on the total amount of pleasure or pain they can cause./nThis reduction of creatures to containers can be problematic, as it reduces them to mere means to the ends of others.
