Categorizing Drugs: Schedule I and Medical Use

Heroin is considered highly addictive and harmful with no medical benefits, placing it as a schedule one drug. On the other hand, cocaine satisfies the first criteria of being addictive and harmful, but it is used medically as a local anesthetic. MDMA and marijuana also fall under schedule one due to their high potential for abuse, while methamphetamine has a medical use. The definition of abuse is loose, encompassing non-medical use. This implies that technically, even a grape could be classified as a schedule one agent.
