Coaching skills in basketball can be applied to emotion regulation. Any time a feeling is bigger than the skills for the feeling, it's going to come out and behavior every time. Demonizing the feeling won't help, what your kid needs is a skill to match it. For instance, you can help your kid simulate the experience of losing a match by using an indoor ball to get some of the feeling out without breaking anything. You can also prepare your kid mentally for the feeling of losing. Helping your kid develop a skill is crucial for them to behave differently.
