Working Well Beings
Transforming Organizational Climate and Culture
The distinction between organizational culture and climate is crucial for effective leadership. While culture consists of the unwritten values, beliefs, and attitudes shaped over time, it is difficult to change and often misaligned with operational behaviors. Leaders should prioritize shaping the organizational climate instead, focusing on observable behaviors, decisions, and priorities that reflect the values they espouse. For instance, leaders must demonstrate their commitment to employee wellbeing by making decisions that prioritize it over short-term profit, thereby creating tangible evidence of their values. This proactive approach to climate management can lead to a natural evolution of culture, as employees begin to internalize and believe in the organizational values when they see them enacted consistently. In contrast, an emphasis on persuading employees to accept certain values without tangible action can result in a disconnect, undermining the overall effectiveness of cultural initiatives.
