Epidemiology and cohort studies are crucial in drawing conclusions about health risks, especially when randomized controlled trials are not feasible. Studies on non-nutritive sweeteners show a split opinion on their cancer risk, but a majority indicate no increase in risk. On the other hand, consistent evidence supports that higher intake of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and fiber decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality. A meta-analysis revealed that for every 10 gram increase in fiber intake, there was a 10% relative decrease in the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality.
