Being intentional with protein and fiber in some meals allows more freedom in others. Controlling portion sizes and managing hunger is key. Learning to not crave food leads to more freedom and better choices. A study showed that both a high protein low carb diet without dessert and a high protein high carb diet with dessert resulted in significant weight loss.
