The Three Kinds of Perfectionism
There are three kinds of perfectionism: self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed. Self-oriented perfectionism involves setting high personal standards. Other-oriented perfectionism includes having high expectations for others. Socially prescribed perfectionism entails feeling pressured by others to constantly excel, which is considered deeply unhealthy and can lead to the expectation of always surpassing previous achievements. While self-oriented perfectionism may be perceived as mostly healthy, socially prescribed perfectionism appears to be detrimental.
