Burnout, Stress and Physics
Stress can lead to burnout, which is a cumulative result of the number, intensity, time, and frequency of stressors we face. Burnout occurs when the total stressors exceed our capacity to bear them. It is not the individual stressors that break us, but the accumulation of multiple stressors over time. Stress in humans can be likened to a physics concept where stress is the intensity of challenges faced divided by the skills and resources available to deal with them. Thus, our ability to handle stress depends on the balance between the challenges we face and our coping resources, explaining why individuals react differently to similar stressors based on their resourcefulness.
