Macrophages and Atherosclerosis
Macrophages are vital immune cells present in the sub-entimal space that work to clear away debris, including oxidized LDL particles trapped in proteoglycans. The present lipid hypothesis suggests that when macrophages encounter oxidized LDL particles, they consume them but get stuck, contributing to the progression of atherosclerosis.
