"When should a leader step down?" "Leadership alternatives and managing up"
Leaders should step down when they are aware of their own limitations and recognize that they are not the right person to take the organization further. Humility and leaving before causing harm to one's own career are admirable qualities in a leader. One clue for leaders to consider is when their work becomes self-focused instead of other-focused. Additionally, younger generations are not showing interest in senior leadership roles due to the pressure, stress, responsibility, and layoffs that come with it. To address this, leadership needs to be made a more rewarding experience. Some individuals prioritize work-life balance and are content with making a decent living, enjoying their colleagues, and having work subsidize their lives. It is important to embrace this mindset and make room for non-leadership contributors as well. However, if individuals change their mind and become interested in leadership, that should also be encouraged to build more representative, inclusive, and human-centered companies.
