The Power of a Good Fable
Human beings are storytelling animals./nThe simplicity of a story, especially a heroic one, is appealing to us./nThe main take away from the conversation is that Rosa Parks' story is more appealing to us than the reality of her history. Rosa Parks was not different from many other people who had made unsuccessful attempts to change the way black people were treated. She was vocal and rebellious, which may have annoyed some people. The fable of her history that we hear is simpler and more controllable than the reality, which is more complicated. We can look back with pride at what we assume the role we would have played in her situation. The vast majority of Americans were not in support of what was happening, and most white Americans felt that the change was happening too fast.
