Eating high glycemic carbs before bed raises insulin and helps amino acids enter the muscles. With more tryptophan than other amino acids in the blood, it crosses the blood-brain barrier, promoting melatonin synthesis for better sleep. However, this only applies if it's been a long time since your last protein meal and you only eat carbs before bed. While the mechanism is partly supported, there's no strong evidence that it improves sleep.
