Sleep and Nutrition: Pre-Sleep Snacks, and How Your Diet Impacts Your Sleep

The Stronger By Science Podcast

NOTE

Why eating high glycemic carbohydrate before bed may not improve sleep

Eating high glycemic carbs before bed raises insulin and helps amino acids enter the muscles. With more tryptophan than other amino acids in the blood, it crosses the blood-brain barrier, promoting melatonin synthesis for better sleep. However, this only applies if it's been a long time since your last protein meal and you only eat carbs before bed. While the mechanism is partly supported, there's no strong evidence that it improves sleep.
