Testosterone decline: Evidence and possible explanations

There is convincing evidence that testosterone levels have declined over time. Cohort studies have shown that testosterone levels tend to be lower in men recruited in the 2000s, 90s, and 80s compared to age-matched men. Longitudinal studies have also demonstrated a decline in testosterone levels over decades. Possible explanations for this decline include chemical exposure in adult or adolescent life or in utero, as well as sedentary lifestyles and increased body size. Testosterone can be converted to estrogen in peripheral tissue, such as fatty tissue. Additionally, the insulation of the testicles by increased thigh fat can lower testosterone production efficiency. The heat can have negative effects on sperm health and testosterone levels.
