Addressing Reactive Behavior in Children
When addressing reactive behavior in children, it's important to approach the situation in a non-confrontational manner. Reactivity should be acknowledged but not addressed in the heat of the moment. It's more effective to discuss the behavior during calm periods, using repetition to reinforce the message. The approach is likened to addressing a child's biting behavior; addressing the issue outside the emotional moment leads to better understanding and learning. By using this non-emotional and repetitive approach, it's possible to break the cycle of learned reactive behavior in children.
