Applying a Therapeutic Model to Real-life Grief and Loss Experiences
In working with someone who has experienced loss and has a small window of tolerance, a therapist must first connect with the person and acknowledge their grief. The therapist must also be anchored in their own nervous system to effectively help the other person. Normalizing grief reactions and giving time for the grieving process is important, but if someone remains in a shut-down state for an extended period, more work may be needed to help them come out of it.
