Power Resides in the Party, Not the State
Authoritarian regimes often operate through a dual structure where power lies not solely in the state but primarily within a party apparatus. This separation allows for a nominal leader to exist while real authority is wielded by the party's leader. These regimes utilize the state for enforcement, often through mechanisms like police forces, but simultaneously maintain their own private enforcement entities, such as the SS in Nazi Germany. This illustrates a strategy of alienating public structures from the actual power dynamics, reinforcing the idea that power can be obscured behind state facades, leading to societal disconnect.
