Heart-Healthy Habits Improve Erectile Function

Testosterone replacement may slightly improve erectile dysfunction (ED) caused by low testosterone levels, but it will not fully reverse it. Common medications like high blood pressure meds and antidepressants can also contribute to ED. Vascular issues are the primary cause of ED due to high rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. About 50% of men over 50 have ED, with the risk increasing with age. Keeping the heart healthy is crucial for erectile function as the blood vessels to the penis are similar to those leading to the heart. Maintaining a heart-healthy diet by consuming low processed foods, fruits, vegetables, and avoiding processed meats can reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems and ED. Regular cardiovascular exercise, around 150 minutes per week, is also shown to improve erections and reduce the likelihood of ED development.
