NOTE

Role of NAD and NADH in Energy Transfer and Aging

NAD and NADH are crucial components in the energy conversion process within the body. A study from 2015 revealed that NAD levels decline by 10 to 20% over four decades, while NADH levels increase by a similar percentage, suggesting that the total levels of both remain stable. NAD serves as an essential electron transporter, facilitating the conversion of chemical energy from food into electrical energy within mitochondria through the electron transport chain. The process involves breaking down organic molecules like carbohydrates and fats into smaller molecules, which enter the mitochondria to ultimately produce ATP, water, and carbon dioxide. As individuals age, the decline in NAD levels is more accurately interpreted as a decrease in redox potential—a measure of the ability to effectively transfer energy—rather than a mere reduction in NAD. This reduction in redox potential indicates that mitochondrial function deteriorates with age, impacting energy production. Many anti-aging strategies focus on combating reactive oxygen species (ROS) that hinder mitochondrial efficiency, stressing the importance of maintaining healthy NAD levels for optimal cellular energy metabolism.
