Responses to Violence: Case Studies of Ms. Dew and Philando Castile

The selection of these case studies was based on how people responded to incidents of violence, given that the violence was often invisible. Ms. Dew, an Aboriginal woman in Australia, died in police custody after being arrested while seeking help from domestic abuse. Her family and friends organized afterward to retain her memory. In contrast, Philando Castile, an African-American man in Minneapolis, was shot by the police during a routine traffic stop. His girlfriend filmed the incident and live streamed it, showcasing the use of citizen journalism. Despite the geographical difference, the similar mistreatment and responses to these cases highlight the changing landscape of citizen involvement in such incidents.
